Thinking of Starting a Business? Read This First

Starting a business sounds exciting, doesn’t it?

The freedom, the control, doing something you actually care about. But before you go ordering business cards or making an Instagram account, there are a few things you really need to think about first.

And trust me, getting these sorted early will save you a whole lot of headaches down the line.

What’s the plan?

Before anything else, you’ve got to know what you’re doing and why you’re doing it.

That means sitting down and actually writing out a plan. It doesn’t have to be fancy, just something that helps you get clear on what you’re offering, who it’s for, and how you’re going to deliver it. Even if it’s a one-pager in Google Docs, that’s enough to start. You can always go back and update it as things evolve.

How are you handling the money?

Money is where things get real.

You need a basic financial plan that covers how much it’ll cost to get started, how you’ll pay yourself, and what you’ll do if things are slow at the beginning. Don’t just guess it’ll work out. Set a budget. Be honest about what you can afford. And don’t forget to factor in things like taxes, supplies, software, and random stuff you didn’t even think about. Because that will happen.

Don’t skip the boring (but important) stuff

I know it’s not the most exciting part, but choosing your legal setup matters.

Are you going solo as a sole trader? Setting up a limited company? Something else? It changes how you get taxed, how much paperwork you’ll have to deal with, and even how protected your personal money is if things go wrong. It’s worth looking into this properly and getting it right from the start. It might be a bit dull, but future you will be glad you did.

What tools will actually help?

This is where smart planning comes in.

You’ll probably need a few tools to keep things running smoothly. One you don’t want to overlook is enterprise payroll software, especially if you plan on hiring anyone. It makes life easier when it comes to paying people properly, keeping track of hours, handling tax stuff, and avoiding the kind of mistakes that get you in trouble. Even if it’s just you at first, it’s worth thinking about now. Starting simple is fine, but you want to be ready to grow.

How are people going to find you?

No matter how brilliant your idea is, people won’t magically know about it.

You’ll need to shout about your business a bit. That could be through social media, a solid website, maybe even a newsletter or just good old-fashioned word of mouth. But whatever it is, don’t wait until after you launch to think about it. Start building some buzz early and keep it going. It’ll make all the difference when you’re trying to get those first few customers through the door.

Don’t skip these steps when it comes to starting your own business. Once all of the above is checked off or planned, you can get to arranging the exciting bits of your business!
