The RACE Framework




The RACE Framework (Reach, Act, Convert, Engage) was developed by Smart Insights in 2010 as a practical marketing framework for the digital age. It provides a structured approach to managing digital marketing activities and is a more granular and modern alternative to the traditional marketing mix.

  • Reach: Building awareness and driving traffic to digital properties.
  • Act: Encouraging interaction and engagement on a website or social media.
  • Convert: Turning engaged visitors into paying customers.
  • Engage: Building customer loyalty and advocacy through continued interaction.

This model is a response to the complexity of digital marketing and helps businesses track performance across the entire online customer lifecycle.

The RACE Framework is a practical and action-oriented marketing planning model developed by Dave Chaffey of Smart Insights.

It provides a simple, structured approach to managing and improving your digital marketing activities, from initial brand awareness to long-term customer loyalty.

The acronym RACE stands for the four key stages of the customer journey:

1. Reach

This first stage is all about building brand awareness and visibility. The goal is to get your brand, products, and services in front of as many of your target audience members as possible. This is the top of the marketing funnel, where you’re working to attract new visitors to your website or social media platforms.

  • Strategies: This stage uses a variety of channels, including paid, owned, and earned media. Think search engine optimization (SEO), social media marketing, content marketing, paid advertising (e.g., Google Ads, social media ads), and external email campaigns.
  • Key Metrics: Website visitors, social media followers, reach, impressions, and traffic from various sources.

2. Act (Interact)

Once you’ve “reached” potential customers, the “Act” stage is about encouraging them to interact with your brand. This isn’t about making a sale yet; it’s about getting them to take a desired action that moves them further along the customer journey. This could be anything from reading a blog post and watching a video to signing up for a newsletter or downloading a lead magnet.

  • Strategies: This stage focuses on creating engaging, valuable content and a smooth user experience. Remarketing campaigns, customer reviews and testimonials, and affiliate marketing are all effective tactics to keep your brand top-of-mind and build trust.
  • Key Metrics: Time spent on site, bounce rate, click-through rate (CTR) on ads, social media engagement (likes, shares, comments), and lead generation.

3. Convert

The “Convert” stage is where your audience takes the final step to become a paying customer. This is the point of sale, whether it happens online through an e-commerce transaction or offline. The focus here is on guiding a prospect from showing interest to completing a purchase.

  • Strategies: This stage relies on clear calls-to-action (CTAs), a streamlined checkout process, persuasive messaging, and targeted campaigns (e.g., abandoned cart emails, special offers).
  • Key Metrics: Conversion rate, online and offline sales, revenue, and average order value (AOV).

4. Engage

The final and crucial stage is all about building a long-term relationship with your customers to foster loyalty and advocacy. The “Engage” stage aims to increase customer lifetime value (CLV) by encouraging repeat purchases and turning happy customers into brand advocates.

  • Strategies: This involves a mix of communications like email marketing, social media presence, personalized content, loyalty programs, and exceptional customer service.
  • Key Metrics: Repeat purchases, customer retention rate, customer satisfaction scores (CSAT), customer loyalty, and social shares/advocacy.
