The Rapid Planning Method (RPM) is a system developed by performance coach Tony Robbins. Despite the name, it isn’t just about moving “fast”—it’s about moving with purpose.
Most people use “to-do lists” which focus on activities (the “what”). RPM shifts the focus to the Result and the Purpose (the “why”), which naturally filters out busywork.
The Three Pillars of RPM
Think of this as a vertical thinking process. Before you write down a single task, you must answer three questions:
- Results-Focused: What do I actually want? Define the specific outcome. Instead of “Go to the gym,” your result might be “Increase my energy and lose 5 lbs.”
- Purpose-Driven: Why do I want it? This is your fuel. If the “why” isn’t strong enough, you won’t follow through when things get difficult. (e.g., “To feel confident in my clothes and have the stamina to play with my kids.”)
- Massive Action Plan (MAP): What are the specific steps? Only now do you list the tasks. However, because you know the Result and Purpose, you can prioritize the 20% of actions that give you 80% of the progress.
How to Build an RPM Block?
When you sit down to plan your week or a specific project, organize your thoughts into “blocks” that look like this:
| Component | Description | Example |
| Result | The specific target. | Launch a professional personal website. |
| Purpose | The emotional “hook.” | To establish authority in my field and attract high-paying clients. |
| MAP | The sequence of actions. | 1. Buy domain. 2. Draft copy. 3. Select template. 4. Hit publish. |
Why it works better than a To-Do List?
- Reduces Stress: You stop feeling overwhelmed by a 50-item list because you see how those items “chunk” into 3 or 4 major results.
- Increases Drive: By connecting tasks to a “Purpose,” you turn “I have to” into “I want to.”
- Eliminates “Wheel Spinning”: It forces you to ask if a task actually contributes to your desired result. If it doesn’t, you delete it.
Pro Tip: Don’t try to RPM every tiny detail of your life (like “buying milk”). Save it for the “Big Rocks”—your career goals, health, relationships, and finances.
Draft an RPM block for a specific goal you’re working on right now.
