Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) is a key performance metric used in manufacturing to measure how effectively equipment is utilized against its maximum potential during scheduled production times.

It quantifies the percentage of manufacturing time that is truly productive.

What is Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE)?

OEE provides a holistic view of manufacturing performance by considering three core factors:

  • Availability: This measures the percentage of scheduled time that the equipment is actually available to run. It accounts for downtime losses, such as equipment breakdowns, planned maintenance, setups, and changeovers.
  • Performance: This assesses how well the equipment is performing when it is running, compared to its theoretical maximum speed. It accounts for performance losses, like minor stops, idling, and slow cycles.
  • Quality: This evaluates the rate of good products produced versus the total number of products produced. It accounts for quality losses, such as defects, scrap, and rework.

How is Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) Calculated?

The OEE is calculated by multiplying the three factors together:

OEE = Availability × Performance × Quality

Each of these factors is expressed as a percentage (or decimal) derived from specific calculations:

  • Availability = (Run Time) / (Planned Production Time)
    • Run Time = Planned Production Time – Stop Time (planned and unplanned downtime)
  • Performance = (Ideal Cycle Time × Total Count) / Run Time
    • Alternatively: Performance = (Total Output) / (Theoretical Output)
  • Quality = (Good Count) / (Total Count)

A 100% OEE represents perfect production: running at maximum speed without interruption, producing only good parts. In reality, achieving 100% is virtually impossible, but a high OEE score indicates efficient operations. A common benchmark for good OEE in discrete manufacturing is around 85%, while 60% suggests significant room for improvement.
