Managing Internal Politics

Internal politics can definitely be tricky to navigate! It’s an unavoidable part of any organization, but you can learn to manage it effectively.

To give you the best advice, I’d love to know a bit more about what you’re hoping to achieve. Are you looking to:

  1. Understand internal politics better (i.e., how to read the room, identify key players)?
  2. Protect yourself and your team from negative political maneuvers?
  3. Influence decisions and drive your agenda forward more effectively?

General Strategies for Managing Internal Politics

While I wait for your focus, here are three core, practical strategies:

  1. Build a Diverse Network: Don’t just network with people who agree with you or are on your team. Intentionally build strong, positive working relationships across different departments, levels, and functions. This gives you broader perspective, varied support, and advance notice of potential issues.
  2. Focus on Results and Value: The best defense against negative politics is to be undeniably valuable. Consistently deliver high-quality work that supports the company’s strategic goals. When your contributions are clear and measurable, it’s harder for political opponents to undermine you.
  3. Practice Strategic Communication: Be mindful of what you share, with whom, and how.
    • Keep Sensitive Conversations Private: Use direct communication (in-person or private chat) for sensitive topics, rather than public forums.
    • Frame Your Ideas: Always connect your proposals to the broader organizational mission or the benefit of another stakeholder. It’s not “my idea,” it’s “the solution that will improve [metric] for [department].”

Which of those three areas—Understand, Protect, or Influence—is your biggest priority right now?
